About San Martín de los Andes

Founded on February 4, 1898, San Martin de los Andes, a typical mountain village with charming architecture, has more than 45,000 inhabitants and is located on the eastern headwaters of Lacar Lake, south of the province of Neuquén.
Since its beginnings, San Martín de los Andes main economic activities were trade and lumber-related businesses. From the creation of Lanin National Park in 1937, with administrative headquarters in San Martín, timber harvesting for commercial purposes started to decrease, giving way to tourism, which is now the city’s main economic resource.

Surrounded by vast forests and deep glacial lakes, San Martin de los Andes is the head of the famous 7 lakes circuit, it is part of the world-famous Route 40 and is the home to one of the major ski resorts in Patagonia Argentina, Cerro Chapelco. These features make it the major tourist center in the province of Neuquén.
Likewise, the beautiful San Martin is the gateway to a host of recreational activities, both for adventure tourism and conventional tours, providing options for all ages. Estaban and his team are first class. They arranged everything for the week. Making the trip so easy. And of course, the fishing. Each day we fished different water. Including a really fun overnight camping trip 1/2 way through a river float. We pulled up to the campsite that was totally set up with tents cots and sleeping bags. And, we enjoyed roasted lamb over an open fire. 3 rivers and a lake (really fun). Estaban and guides put us on plenty of fish over the 6 fishing days.Estaban and his family made us feel really welcome to Patagonia. And the food? Awesome. I would definitely recommend. Southern Loops.

Esteban and his crew of guides were amazing. A group of 8 women anglers spent a week fishing in Patagonia on several rivers. We enjoyed our time on and off the rivers and lake. The fishing was both fun and challenging. The fishing, accommodations and food were well worth the value.

Just got back from an amazing all women’s fishing adventure with Southern Loops in Patagonia! I had never fly fished before, and was with a group that was much more experienced. Esteban and his family run SouthernLoops like a well oiled machine. Everything is so well organized and thoughtful - two words not ordinarily associated with fly fishing guiding services. From airport transfers, to hotels, to your time in cities on your way to Patagonia, and of course the fishing experience itself, it’s all taken care of and run professionally but with a lovely personal touch by Esteban and his team.My wife and I had one of our favorite shared travel memories during our week with Esteban. I certainly cannot wait to return for round 2.

Out trip with Esteban, his guides, and the entire team at Southernloops was without question one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The fly fishing was good, the guides worked hard to help maximize our experience, and the service provided by Esteban and his team was immaculate! The scenery, the food, the wine, the culture, and the guides were all outstanding. Also, I was able to share this trip with my two sons and a good friend…and Esteban and his team went out of their way to make sure we maximized our experience. The personal touch was absolutely incredible….so if you’re looking for a 5 Star fishing experience in Patagonia I would highly recommend Esteban and Southern Loops!!
