Fly fishing trip packing information

Are you heading to Northern Patagonia Argentina for a fly fishing Trip? Here you will find a detailed packing information that will be of huge help for sure.

What to pack to your North Patagonia fly fishing trip.

Northern Patagonia Argentina is a mountainous area close to the Andes, which usually shows a wide thermal amplitude. We hardly recommend our guest to dress on layers when going to the river. This will allow you to face any sudden weather change.

Please never forget to carry a rain jacket and a good fleece to the River, as well as a change of dry clothes in case you get wet for any reason.

Rocommended Clothes

These are the fishing clothes we usually use to recommend our clients to bring down for their fishing days with us – San Martín de los Andes and Junín de los Andes area

  • Gore-tex jacket.
  • Nano puff or Fleece.
  • Thermal underwear (Mostly recommended for early –NOV– and late season –APR or MAY– trips).
  • Fleece pant (Mostly recommended for early or late season trips or for camp nights).
  • Quick dry long sleeve shirts or T-shirts.
  • Quick dry long pant (Mostly recommended for wet wading during the summer).
  • Polarized sunglasses.
  • Hat (full brim and / or baseball cap).
  • Buff
  • Sun gloves.

If you are travelling to Southern Patagonia, you might note that the fleece pant and the Thermal underwear may be needed during the whole season.

General Items

There are some items which should be definitely packed for a fishing trip. These would be:

  • Sunscreen at least 30 SPF.

  • Headlight for camping.
  • Medium size Backpack (much better if waterproof).
  • Wading stick –if you physical condition required it–.

These would be the most recommended items for those who travel to the area around San Martín and Junín de los Andes, where we actually guide.

  • 2 #5/6 rods
  • 1 #7/8 rod for streamers on the Limay Medio River.
  • 1 reel w/extra spool for each #5/6 rod loaded with a WF-F line and a sinking tip line each.
  • 1 reel w/ sinking tip line (Outbound short type) for the #7/8 rod.
  • Three 9’ 3x leaders for the WF-F lines
  • Three 7.5’ 1 x leaders for the sink tip lines

Waders and boots… yes or no?

Well, let me tell you that wading gear will be a must if you are coming down to Patagonia Argentina facing a fly fishing trip either very early on the season or from early March on, as well as during the whole season if you are traveling to the southern areas of Patagonia, where wet wading possibilities would be lower even during the summer months due to weather conditions and water temperature. Also if your fishing schedule imply some all-day wading trips.

For the Northern areas, like the ones around San Martín and Junín de los Andes –where we operate-, where you can expect to fish a lot from the boat and the weather is quite friendly during the summer, you might think to leave the wading stuff at home and travel a little more light carrying only a gore rain pant and a pair of sandals. As a guide, the only issue I found over the years when a client decide not to bring waders and boots, is the lose of flexibility if we unexpectedly have to face an all-day wading trip.
